The Mailbox

Vernon Culligan had been dead to the town of Draydon, Virginia, so long that when the crusty Vietnam vet finally died, only one person noticed. Twelve-year-old Gabe grew up in the foster care system until a social worker located his Uncle Vernon two years before. When he comes home to discover that his uncle has died of a heart attack, he's terrified of going back into the system--so he tells no one. The next day, he discovers a strange note in his mailbox: I HAVE A SECRET. DO NOT BE AFRAID. And his uncle's body is gone. Thus begins a unique correspondence destined to save the two people that depended on Vernon for everything. But eventually, Vernon's death will be discovered, and how will Gabe and the mystery note writer learn to move forward?

  6. I love this book! Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down! Seriously.... This book is really funny! I also had many mixed emotions about this book. Once you are at the end you will be thinking "That's it!" This book has a very suprising ending that will make you think. This is a wonderful book that everyone should read!

    1. Hey, c6pearson! Gilly is pretty rude to her "family", but you have to understand her background and how she feels. I mean, if you were in her place you might act the same way, right? Also, how rude she is, made me laugh out loud! Thanks for listening, c6pearson! (:

  11. Thanks f1lantz castaneda i just finished the book and it was one of my favorites. I understand what you said about Gilly's background. actually i wouldn't act that way to my foster family, even though i am not an orphan, i would be polite and not curse.

  13. I agree with F1Lantz Castaneda and c6pearson about Gilly being rude. I really did not like that about her, but in the end it made me cry when Gilly started loving her family. that was my favorite part. I would deffintly recomend this book.

    1. i know right! She started loving Trotter when it was time for her to go. and poor William Ernest! He had cried. well so did Trotter AND Gilly.it really surprised me when Gilly had said she didn't wanna live with what she called "stranger". But at the same time i bet she was surprised that someone actually came for her. I wish they would make a sequel to this book!

  14. This book is for readers who'd like something on the mature side. Gilly includes some humor insulting Ms. Trotter that is a bit too mature for younger readers. Otherwise, It's a heartfelt book that I'd recommend. Honk! :o)
